Episode 4 - Does Enrollment Matter?

School finance can be complicated. That’s why Michigan City Area Schools is breaking it down in our special Words with Wynni series, Making Sense of School Finance.

In Episode 4, MCAS Communications Intern Wynni sits down with Chief Financial Officer Andy Sperling to explore why student enrollment matters when it comes to school funding.

Enrollment is an important part of Indiana’s school funding formula, which means changes in the number of students a district serves can affect the amount of state funding it receives. But when enrollment declines, many districts' expenses do not decrease at the same rate.

Using a school bus as an example, Wynni and Andy explain the relationship between enrollment, revenue and expenses, and how MCAS continually monitors and adjusts its budget as enrollment changes.
