School Finance: Where Your Dollars Go

This webpage will help you understand how school funding works, how your tax dollars are used, and the challenges we are facing as a school district.

MCAS Key Funding Sources

State Funding

The largest portion of MCAS revenue comes from the state and is based primarily on student enrollment. This revenue supports the Education Fund. The Education Fund supports expenses of the school corporation, such as teacher salary benefits, paraprofessionals, and curricular materials.

Local Property Taxes

These funds are designated by law for specific purposes, such as debt service and operations.

Federal Taxes

These funds provide targeted support for programs such as special education, Title Funds, and Nutrition Services.

Funding buckets

Each Fund serves a specific purpose:

  • Education Fund = Teaching and Instruction Needs
  • Operations Fund = Day-to-Day Operations Needs
  • Debt Service Fund = Long-Term Improvement Needs

Michigan City Area Schools carefully manages each one of these funds in accordance with Indiana law, ensuring the resources are used for their intended purposes and to support the district’s needs.

Note: MCAS is able to complete building projects while still facing financial challenges in other areas, because funding is separated into specific categories ("buckets") by law.
